Little Rock Sustainability Summit

Message from the Mayor of Little Rock:

Sustainability Summit

I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 2nd Annual Little Rock Sustainability Summit on Thursday October 28 and Friday, October 29 at the Robinson Center. The event, which is coordinated by the Mayor’s Commission on Sustainability, will feature exhibits, workshops, vendors, networking opportunities and two keynote speakers. During the evening of Thursday, October 27, the Capitol Hotel will be hosting a reception for all registered attendees of the Summit.

The keynote speakers for the Sustainability Summit are Marc Ott and Karl Rabago. Mr. Ott is the City Manager of Austin, TX, which is a city that is truly on the forefront of sustainability issues. Mr. Rabago is the Vice President for Distributed Energy Services for Austin Energy, the municipal power provider for the city. Mr. Rabago has worked with some of the leading technology in the field, including Smart Grids and other fascinating sustainable approaches to energy consumption.

I would like to personally invite you to attend the Sustainability Summit, which is open to the public and free of charge.

This summit is a great opportunity to learn how you can partner with public and private entities in our community to build a greener Little Rock. I think you will enjoy meeting others who work in this field as we all share lessons and offer support to each other. As a city, we have to budget for green initiatives even during lean financial times and this summit offers a great opportunity to build the relationships that will move us forward to a greener future.

This event will bring together some of Arkansas’s most respected and knowledgeable citizens to discuss topics including green building and land use, energy and water conservation, landfill usage options and recycling.

Speakers include:
Chris Ladner, LEED AP, CEM, LEED Home Rater, LH Associate
April Ambrose, LEED AP
Dr. Nancy Landrum, Director, SBNCA; Professor at UALR
Page Wilson, Paul Page Dwellings
Sylvia Blain, Executive Director of Arkansas Local Foods
Mark Robertson, MESA Lanscape Architects
David Anderson, GUS good design co-op
Jim Carr, Professor of Construction Management at UALR
Keith Wingfield, President of Home Builders Association of Greater Little Rock and co-Project Manager of the Green-Built Model Home

The two-day event will include speakers and opportunities for discussion plus a Networking Reception and luncheon. A Sustainability Exhibit Hall will also be filled with a variety of exhibitors showcasing green products and services currently available to enable our communities to further meet sustainability goals. All events are free and open to the public. The continuing education classes, for attendees needing hours, have a small charge.

Please pass this information on to your staff and colleagues who are involved in developing Green Initiatives and hearing about how other cities, municipalities, businesses, and individuals are working to promote sustainability.
